According to Dr Hrishikesh, a sperm retrieval procedure is recommended for males suffering from obstructive azoospermia and non-obstructive azoospermia.

Obstructive Azoospermia

In this condition, the testicles produce sperm, but the male reproductive tract blocks the sperm from entering the semen.

A few factors that can cause this are:
  • Vasectomy
  • Obstruction in the epididymis and ejaculatory duct
  • Cystic fibrosis

Non-obstructive Azoospermia

Non-obstructive azoospermia is when the body does not produce sperm at all or has very few sperm that don’t appear in the ejaculate.
This type is diagnosed among 10% of men.

Sperm Retrieval Procedure Types

There are three types of sperm retrieval procedures that are performed for treating male infertility.

Sperm Retrieval Procedure Types

Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE)

  • This treatment method is done on men with no sperm in the ejaculate.
  • TESE procedure is done by making a small incision in the testis and examining the tubules for the presence of sperm
  • The TESE method is performed under general anaesthesia.
  • This procedure can be performed in the operating room or the office alone by giving sedation to the patient.

Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA)

A testicular sperm aspiration procedure is done on men who have obstructive azoospermia.
The procedure is done by giving local anaesthesia to the patient.
The TESEA procedure is done by inserting a needle in the testicle and aspirating tissue and fluid.

Microdissection TESE (MicroTESE)

This treatment method is done when the body does not release or make healthy sperms. Microdissection test (Micro TESE) is a procedure that takes sperm directly from the testicular tissue of the male reproductive system. It is essential to take a semen analysis before the MicroTESE procedure to assess the semen.
